Into Focus

Take a slow approach to photography by focusing on details.

When photographing landscapes, it's been easier for me to immediately identify what captivates my interest. When photographing nature's details, though, it can be a bit more challenging to know where to focus. As a starting place, I slow down and look for textures, connections, movement, variation, uniqueness, asymmetry, contrast, layers, and patterns.

Textures.
​Notice the rough leaves standing in contrast to the soft petals.

Connections.
​Notice the bright background colors aligning with the foreground leaves. 

Movement.
​Notice these two blooms embracing in the fluttering wind.

Variation.
​Notice the variation of pink tones in this bunch of blossoms.

Uniqueness.
​Notice the middle blossom standing out from the crowd. 

Asymmetry.
​Notice the group of leaves extending out from one side of this circle of blossoms.

Contrast.
Notice the way the hard, dark stems contrast with the soft, bright petals. 

Layers.
Notice overlapping petals, adding to the soft and gentle quality. 

Patterns.
​Notice the curves and lines of this more abstract perspective.
